This policy brief is an update of a 2021 report by RRI and McGill University and summarizes findings from a study undertaken by the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI) and McGill University to systematically analyze the carbon rights held by Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples in 33 countries in Africa (11), Asia (9), and Latin America (13). These countries cover an estimated 67 percent of the world’s tropical and subtropical forests and have a combined rural population of 1.54 billion people, over 44 percent of the world’s rural population.

This Practice Note aims to provide guidance on the practical aspects of building compensation claims on behalf of torture survivors. It is focused primarily on litigation before regional and international human rights bodies, although it may also be useful to claims brought before national courts and other bodies.

Global Witness documented that 196 defenders were murdered in 2023 after exercising their right to protect their lands and the environment from harm. The actual number is likely to be higher. This tips the total number of killings to over 2,000 globally since Global Witness started reporting data in 2012. Global Witness estimates that the total now stands at 2,106 murders.

Amid a surge in asylum seekers, Costa Rica urgently needs to renew its special protection programs, and international donors must provide sustained support to strengthen its overwhelmed asylum system, and provide safe, legal pathways for migrants.

Faith and religious practice are central to most people’s lives in the Global South. Religious institutions are at the heart of society, the cornerstones of the community, with a long reach into even the most remote communities. Religious leaders hold people’s trust and often have authority and influence where state and local officials do not.

Understanding the role of faith and faith-based organisations is therefore central to an effective development and humanitarian response, and to building mutually beneficial partnerships across a wide range of issues and actors.

Well over one billion people around the world require the use of at least one assistive technology (AT); by 2050, this need is expected to double, due to ageing global populations, increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases and other factors.

Global commitments recognise AT as a human right, yet only 5–15% of the population that needs AT has access to it. This injustice reduces the economic opportunities of individuals, families and entire nations; not to mention coming at a great cost to the quality of life of people who need AT.

At least 177 land and environmental defenders were killed last year for trying to protect the planet – one person every other day – according to a new report by Global Witness released today, working in collaboration with our partners globally. The new figures bring the total number of defender killings between 2012 and 2022 to 1,910.
